Aran Organization’s Conference on Medicine Availability and Misuse in Sulaymaniyah

On December 8, 2024, a special conference was held by Aran Organization with support from National Endowment for Democracy (NED) in Sulaymaniyah, bringing together 33 participants, including parliamentarians, health officials, doctors, pharmacists, researchers, and activists.
The conference featured a distinguished panel of speakers:
• Dr. Omid Ali, Member of the Kurdistan Parliament
• Mazen Fria Faraj, Head of the Pharmacy Warehouse in Sulaymaniyah Province
• Dr. Haider Adnan Karim, Head of the Pharmacy Warehouse Management System in Sulaymaniyah Province
• Dr. Hiwa Abbas Ahmad, Member of the Sulaymaniyah Branch of the Pharmacists Union of Kurdistan
• Dr. Yad Hamid, Pharmacist
• Dr. Tawana Mohammed Najm, Pharmacist
• Mr. Aso Amin, Researcher
The conference provided an in-depth discussion on critical issues, including the availability and shortage of medicines in public hospitals, and the risks associated with the misuse of certain medicines, particularly their potential conversion into illegal drugs.
In addition to the speakers, more than 25 doctors, health activists, and individuals with a vested interest in the health sector participated in the event. The conference also received extensive media coverage, highlighting the importance of the topics discussed.
