Project Update: Supporting Women Displaced Populations in Chamchamal

Chamchamal – The Aran Organization, with the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), is implementing a crucial project to assist Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Chamchamal district.

The project focuses on providing social, psychological, and health counseling to women, girls, and pregnant women. Its primary objective is to help them overcome the adversities of war and alleviate their poor psychological state.

As part of this project, a community center has been established by the Aran Organization in Charmo City, Chamchamal, where IDP women receive social, psychological, and health counseling.

The project officially commenced on November 1, 2014, and receives direct financial support from UNFPA.

Following the opening of the community center in Charmo City, Chamchamal, the following activities have been successfully implemented:

  • Activities within the Center: Over the past two months, 57 activities were conducted within the community center.
  • Beneficiary Reach: During the same two-month period, 1,832 women, representing 793 families, visited the community center, engaged with Aran teams, and benefited from the project.
  • Recreational Activities: Two recreational activities were organized in the same two months, benefiting 36 women, including sewing courses for IDP women.
  • Parent Meetings: Two meetings were held with the parents of IDP students, with 30 parents participating.
  • Teacher Meetings: Two meetings were also conducted with the teachers of IDP students, with 30 teachers participating.
  • Volunteer Training: In partnership with the Zhiyan Organization, 24 volunteers received training.
  • Specialized Training: Two social workers from Aran and two social workers from the Chamchamal Department of Social Affairs and Human Rights in Chamchamal were sent to Sulaymaniyah to receive training on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases.
  • Distribution of Aid: 300 cartons of specialized supplies for pregnant women were distributed to IDP women in Charmo City.
  • Pregnant Women's Workshop: A meeting was held with pregnant women at the Charmo Health Center, where the Aran Organization's health team provided social and health counseling specifically on childbirth and how pregnant women can protect themselves during displacement.
  • Continuous Medical Support: One of the most critical services provided is the deployment of a gynecologist to the Charmo Health Center in Chamchamal. This doctor continuously provides free daily consultations and treatment specifically for IDP women at the health center.
