About us

Who We Are

Building a stronger civic culture for a more democratic, just and inclusive society

Aran Organization for the Development of Civic Culture is an independent, non-profit civil society organization established in 2013 in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

We work to strengthen civic culture, democratic values, human rights, good governance, accountability and social participation. Through research, community engagement, advocacy, capacity building and partnerships, we work with citizens, young people, women, professionals, journalists, public institutions and other civil society actors to contribute to positive and sustainable change.

Our work is grounded in a simple belief: strong communities, informed citizens and accountable institutions are essential for a peaceful, democratic and inclusive society.

Our History

Aran was established to contribute to the development of a stronger civic culture in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Since our establishment, we have worked on issues that affect people's everyday lives and their ability to participate meaningfully in society. Our programs have evolved in response to emerging challenges and community needs, while remaining focused on our core values of democracy, human rights, accountability, inclusion and social justice.

Over the years, Aran has developed experience in civic engagement, democracy and governance, human rights, youth empowerment, health-sector accountability, legal support, community development and environmental and climate-related issues.

Aran is registered with the relevant authorities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and the Federal Government of Iraq and works with local and international partners to advance its mission.

Our Mission

To promote civic culture, democratic participation, human rights, good governance and accountable institutions by empowering citizens and communities, generating evidence, supporting constructive dialogue and advocating for positive change.

We seek to connect citizens and communities with institutions and decision-makers, while creating opportunities for people to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

Our Vision

A democratic, peaceful and inclusive society where citizens enjoy their rights, participate in public life, and institutions are transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of the people.

What We Do

Our programs respond to important social, institutional and community challenges. We combine research, public engagement, advocacy and practical action to create meaningful impact.

Health Democracy

We work to promote transparency, accountability and citizens' rights within the health sector.

Our work includes research and monitoring of health institutions, pharmaceutical systems, medical education, private healthcare, healthcare workers' rights and other issues affecting the quality and accessibility of healthcare.

We believe that an effective health system requires not only professional services, but also transparency, accountability and respect for patients' rights.

Young people are essential to building the future of a democratic society.

Aran creates opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills, express their ideas, participate in civic life and take action on issues affecting their communities.

Through training, workshops, youth-led initiatives and community activities, we support young people to move from participation to leadership.

We promote and protect human rights through awareness, research, advocacy and legal support.

Our work has included supporting journalists and activists, addressing threats to freedom of expression and digital security, and promoting greater awareness of legal rights and responsibilities.

We believe that protecting rights requires both strong legal frameworks and an informed and active civil society.
